3 Operating conditions
3. Operating conditions Pumped liquids Grundfos circulator pumps are suitable for the
following liquids:
• clean, thin, non-aggressive and non-explosive liquids without solid particles or fibres
• cooling liquids, not containing mineral oil
• domestic hot water, max. 14 °dH, max. 65 °C, peak max. 70 °C
• softened water.
The kinematic viscosity of water is = 1 mm2/s (1 cSt) at 20 °C. If the pump is used for a liquid with a higher
viscosity, the hydraulic performance of the pump will be reduced.
Example: 50 % glycol at 20 °C means a viscosity of approx. 10 mm2/s (10 cSt) and a reduction of pump
performance by approx. 15 %.
Do not pump liquids containing additives that can disturb the functionality of the pump.
When selecting a pump, the viscosity of the pumped liquid must be taken into consideration.
If the pump is installed in a heating system, the water should meet the requirements of accepted standards
on water quality in heating systems, e.g. the German standard VDI 2035.
The pumps must not be used for the transfer of inflammable liquids such as diesel oil and petrol.
UPS and UPSD Large pumps can be used for pumping water/glycol mixtures up to 50 %. The maximum
viscosity of a 50 % glycol mixture at -10 °C is approx.
32 cSt.
Note: When pumping glycol mixtures, the pump performance will be reduced.
To prevent the glycol mixture from degrading, avoid temperatures exceeding the rated liquid temperature
and minimise the operating time at high temperatures.
It is important to clean and flush the system before the glycol mixture is added.
To prevent corrosion or precipitation, the glycol mixture should be checked and maintained regularly. If further
dilution of the supplied glycol is required, follow the glycol supplier's instructions.
Temperature limits Liquid temperature For permissible liquid temperatures of each individual
pump type see the respective data sheet.
Small and medium UP pumps Standard version:
• Short periods (max. 30 min.): +120 °C
• Continuously: +2 °C to +110 °C; -25 °C to +110 °C
• Domestic hot water: +2 °C to +110 °C Cold-water version:
• -25 °C to +95 °C
• -25 °C to +110 °C Large UP pumps
• Short periods (max. 5 min.): +140 °C
• Continuously: -10 °C to +120 °C
• Domestic hot water: up to +60 °C Depending on the cast-iron version and the pump
application, the maximum liquid temperature may be limited by local regulations and laws.
Ambient temperature
• Ambient temperature: 0 °C to 40 °C The ambient temperature for standard pumps with a
permissible minimum liquid temperature of +2 °C should always be lower than the liquid temperature, as
condensation may otherwise form in the stator housing.
Storage temperature
• Storage temperature: -30 °C to +55 °C.
System pressure Small and medium UP pumps
• Pump with unions (PN 10): 1.0 MPa (10 bar)
• Flanged pump (PN 6/10): 0.6/1.0 MPa (6/10 bar)
• Pump with Grundfos flanges: 1.0 MPa (10 bar)
Large UP pumps Test pressure:
• PN 6: 10 bar ~ 1.0 MPa
• PN 10: 15 bar ~ 1.5 MPa
• PN 6/10: 15 bar ~ 1.5 MPa.
Test liquid: +20 °C water containing corrosion inhibitor.
